Germany have beaten Uruguay 3-2 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
Uruguay and Germany battled each other for third and fourth place in their final World Cup fixture in South Africa and the Germans emerged as victors. With nothing to lose both teams played some good attacking football and it took just 19 minutes for Thomas Muller to open the scoring for Germany.Palermo striker Edinson Cavani equalized in the 28th minute to make the scores 1-1 and that’s how it remained until half time.
Diego Forlan gave Uruguay the lead for the first time in the match with a brilliant first time acrobatic volley. But the Germans equalized through defender Marcell Jansen five minutes later.
When it looked like it that this match needed extra time, Sami Khedira headed Germany back in the lead. In the dying seconds Uruguay were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area but Diego Forlan attempt hit the crossbar and that was the last kick of the match.
Germany have finished third in the World Cup for the fourth time and two years running where as for Uruguay, this was the best run for the country since 1970 when they had come fourth after losing to West Germany 1-0.
